Spinaway Stakes

The Spinaway Stakes is an American race for thoroughbred horses open to two-year-old fillies. A Grade I event, it offers a purse of $250,000 and is contested each summer at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. At a distance of seven furlongs (1,408 metres) on the dirt, the Spinaway is a major prep to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

First run in 1881, the Spinaway will be in its 117th running in 2008. It was run at Belmont Park in 1943, 1944 and 1945. It was not run from 1892 to 1900, nor in 1911 and 1912. Prior to 1901 it was set at five furlongs, then at five and a half furlongs from 1901 to 1922. From 1922 to 1993 it was a six furlong race, but in 1994 it became the seven furlong race it is today.

Ruffian won this race in 1974, La Prevoyante in 1972, Numbered Account in 1971, Affectionately in 1962, Cicada in 1961, Top Flight in 1931, Maskette in 1908, and Miss Woodford in 1882.
