[edit] Synopsis
Spike goes in search of his roots and joins a dragon horde, but finds he does not agree with their bullying ways.
[edit] Plot
During a volleyball game, Spike frightens the Little Ponies by inadvertently sneezing a huge jet of fire. Danny comforts Spike, telling him that breathing fire is natural for a growing dragon and that Spike will learn to control it. Spike decides he'll need to learn from other dragons, and the two go in search of a dragon horde. Along the way they meet Weston, a young eagle who's been separated from his parents. Spike realises they're both searching for someone to look up to, and invites Weston to join he and Danny.
The three follow a pillar of smoke in the forest and find a dragon camp, but the huge dragons there are uninterested in the tiny Spike. Their King decides Spike might be of some use, and invites him along to 'visit' a nearby village which he says has been feeding the dragons in exchange for protection. The next morning, the dragons set the village on fire and steal its food, terrorising the villagers in the process. Danny and Weston watch this, and return to Dream Valley to warn the Little Ponies. Locket decides to continue spying on the dragons.
Spike tries to convince the dragons that they'd be happier living like the Little Ponies, playing games and eating cupcakes. The mention of food piques the dragons' interest and they decide to pay Dream Valley a visit. They arrive to find a banquet and a welcome banner, as Locket has warned the Little Ponies of their coming. As the dragons stuff themselves with cupcakes, they tell Megan to keep the food coming, or Dream Valley will be burned. At this, Danny releases a dammed waterfall and the Ponies operate hoses, leaving the dragons soaked. They make a hasty retreat, leaving Spike behind.
Shortly afterwards, Weston's parents arrive and take him home. Spike is pleased but laments that he never found his role model - he doesn't want to be a bully like the other dragons. He has however gained control of his fire, which he gleefully demonstrates by roasting a marshmallow kebab.
[edit] Notes
- Features the song 'Someone To Look Up To'
- This episode has a distinct animation style from the previous series - most notably, the Little Ponies have a longer, more slender shape. The following serial The Golden Horseshoes was also drawn in this style, but the original style was resumed from Flight to Cloud Castle.
- The volleyball game features a yellow earth pony with black hair that bears no resemblance to any established character.
- Shady appears red throughout this episode, and two of her are seen as the dragons leave Dream Valley.
- Spike's eyes change color a lot and don't always match in this episode.
- Danny appears for the last time.
- The French translation is titled L'odyssée de Léo - 'The odyssey of Léo'
