Shane's favorite thing in life, other than his daughter, is music. Weather is writing, playing, or listening to it, he can't get away from music.

[edit] Instruments

  • Drums - Shane started playing drums around 8th grade, and bought his first set right before 10th grade. He was all self-taught up until he started at Berea College, where he began to learn to play jazz drumming. He performed with the Berea College Jazz Band from spring 2002 through fall 2005, touring to places like Pigeon Forge, TN and Disney World's Epcot Center. His favorite song to play was the famous Benny Goodman hit Sing, sing, sing. During his last performance, he had an extended drum solo in the song that lasted almost 3 minutes. While at the college, Shane was also a percussionist in the the Wind Ensemble, playing snare, timpani, bass drum, and cymbals. Shane played drums in a third ensemble at the college, calling itself the Contemporary Percussion Ensemble, later the Berea College Fusion Ensemble. His current drumset is a red Ludwig 5-piece set, with a Zildjian 14" hi-hat, a 20" ZXT ride, and a cheap-o high-hat cymbal as a crash.
  • Guitar - Shane started playing guitar about a year before he started playing drums. He was first given instruction from he dad, Keith Gartner, but has been self-taught since. He still plays the same guitar he learned from, a black Takamine acoustic-electric cutaway. Some guitarists that have been the most influential on his playing are Dave Matthews, Billy Corgan, Adam Jones, and Alex Lifeson.
  • Ukulele - Shane bought a Ukulele one day in college and taught himself how to play. His "uke" was recently broken.
