Speakeasy Records, also called Tru Ruts/Speakeays Records, is the first and only spoken word record label in Minneosta. It includes on its rooster several leading spoken word artists in Minnesota and on the national scene. Truthmaze, who was a member of the first hip hop recording in Minnesota to be release nationally, as part of the I.R.M. Crew; he is also co-founder of legendary Minnesota hip hop group, the Micranots, co-founded with I Self Devine and Kool Akiem - their early recordings were recently rereleased by noted Minnesota hip hop label, the Rhymesayers. Shá Cage, noted spoken word artist and actress from Minnesota, who was recently featured in a UK tour of a spoken word + hip hop theatre production, Word Temple; her work has taken her to England, South Africa, Belgrade, Mali and other cities. e.g. bailey, spoken word artist, historian and innovator, whose work has elevated and brought attention to the spoken scene in Minnesota; he has created or cofounded the first spoken word conference, the first spoken word organization in Minnesota, the first spoken word record label, the first spoken word compilation of Minnesota, including many other firsts. Zell Miller III, noted spoken word artist on the national scene, from Austin, Texas. He is one of the most highly recognized spoken word artists in Austin, receiving many awards and accolades; he has been a member of the Austin Poetry Slam, which has gone to the National Poetry Slam many times; he was also featured in the recent Slam poetry documentary Slam Planet: War of Word.
Speakeasy Records has been producing work since 1997, and recently released the debut album of legendary Minnesota hip hop artist, Truthmaze, in March 2006. It currently has 5 artists on its rooster, and has released 4 EPs and 4 albums over the course of 6 years. Its albums have been reviewed by local newspapers and weekly's, including Start Tribune, City Pages, The Pulse of the Twin Cities and others. It has done two tours, one in the NY area in 2004 and another in the summer of 2006, called the Verbal Graffiti Tour, throughout the Midwest.
