Talk:Spanky Ham

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

spanky ham is a character in drawn together he is the probably least used character and least funny character in the show Cadoor 16:52, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Least funny is completely subjective, but least used is definitely not accurate. That would be Ling-Ling.Raymondluxuryacht 17:31, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

or Toot. --Evildevil 17:24, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

It was Toot up until about midway through the second season, but she had some major stories in the second half of season two, while Ling-Ling had several shows where he didn't have any lines at all (and even when he did, he never had that many). Overall, if we were going to rank the characters from most to least screen time, I would say the list goes Captain Hero, Foxxy, Wooldoor, Clara, Xandir, Spanky, Toot, and Ling-Ling.Raymondluxuryacht 21:46, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Oolong and Zhu Bajie

A quite plausible inspiration is Oolong from Dragon Ball. He's a perveted pig character. He's constantly crude and sex-obsessed. The English Dub I heard even sounds like Spanky Ham.

Of course, Oolong is based on Zhu Bajie, a gluttonous, sex-obsessed pig character from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West (1590).

[edit] Ron Jeremy

It is said in the article that Spankey often serves as a parody of Ron Jeremy. I haven't found anything credible written on it, but it seems that Spanky's teaching special ed classes, and going to special olympics might also be a throw back to Ron who has a Masters degree in Special education.

I wasn't aware of that, but you raise a very good point. Spanky's special ed background may indeed be a reference to Jeremy, especially if it was mentioned on The Surreal Life. (Was it?) The DT creators are noted reality show junkies, so if it was mentioned there, I'm quite prepared to believe it's a deliberate reference. Unfortunately, I never watched the show, so I can't judge.Raymondluxuryacht 20:28, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Porky Pig

People seem insistent on adding that Spanky is based on Porky Pig. I fail to see it at all, so before I revert it one more time, please give me some feedback on this issue. Is there something I'm missing? The fact that they're both pigs does not make one a parody of the other. If you look at pictures of the two, it should be clear how different they are. And to my knowledge, the creators have never said anything about Spanky being based on Porky.Raymondluxuryacht 16:11, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm reverting the Porky Pig bit yet again. It's nice that the person adding it attempts to back up their point with photographs, but honestly, those photos just make their differences even more clear. I think the problem is that all of the characters except Spanky have at least one clear model for their creation among famous pre-existing characters: Clara has Ariel, Hero has Superman, etc. It's only natural that people would want to find one for Spanky too, but honestly, I don't think there is one. He's a general parody of crude internet Flash cartoons, and those are easy to parody without referencing any specific characters. Someone else added at one point that Spanky might have been based on Squigley from the webcomic Sinfest. That one's at least plausible given that Squigley is an internet-based character and has a similar personality to Spanky's, but then, webcomics and webtoons are two different things, and while the personalities are similar, they're not close enough for me to call it a match. If there's something I'm missing, please let me know, but in the absence of any official word from the creators, I think we should refrain from speculating as to who Spanky might have been based on.Raymondluxuryacht 22:19, 9 June 2006 (UTC) To be honest I think he is based on olong from DBZ.--Jay the wiz 03:25, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Possible real origin of the character

This pig is clearly based on the "evil piggie" characters from "Little Susie Experiment" by Killfrog.com. A lot in the show points to that. The "internet download" parts, the simple walking animation and of course the bad behavior.

When I get the chance later, I'll take a look at it and see how similar it is.Raymondluxuryacht 16:10, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
Please do so since I lack the ability to properly format my text for wikipedia and/or and user account. ;) -> Here is an example episode, those pigs do appear in all others as well. http://www.killfrog.com/littlesusie/little.html I cant believe how crappy those toons are. Please note that those were one of the very first online-toons available so it is very possible that they influenced the authors.
I think it might be possible. The animation for the Evil Piggie characters does bear some resemblance to Spanky, though the personalities aren't especially alike. Spanky isn't based on them completely, but it's worth noting, I think, that they may have partially inspired the character.Sandmaster 03:22, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
Well of course. :) Toot Braunstein isn't entirely based on Betty Boop. They took her character and drew it over the top. Thats what happened here as well. I think this is very clearly addworthy.SpongeSebastian 11:07, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

C'mon now... the moment I saw this show this was an obvious influence. --Bobak 20:36, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] original artwork

what does this mean: "Spanky Ham is the only character whose artwork has remained the same since the beginning of production on the show."

An article in Variety from when the show first got picked up shows the original versions of the characters. Except for Spanky, they all look significantly different from the way they do now.[1]Raymondluxuryacht 00:25, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Explanation for recent edits

Regarding Spanky's catchphrase: he does say, "Nothing COULD possibly go wrong" in one episode, but he says "Nothing CAN possibly go wrong" more often, so I changed it back.

I also reverted this edit: "He is attracted to Princess Clara, and at the end of Season One, he even became involved with her; though the couple were not shown breaking up on screen, their relationship was never mentioned again (apart from Spanky saying that "nobody holds a gun to (his) girl" after Xandir points a gun at Clara in "The One Wherein There is a Big Twist"'s Mexican standoff)"

The incident in question does not provide an exception to the passage as stated. The passage merely says that Spanky became involved with Clara at the end of Season One, and their relationship was never mentioned again after that. The Mexican standoff scene took place in the final episode of Season One, so it was covered by the statement already.Raymondluxuryacht 21:03, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
