[edit] Crimson Crazies

Also, a group of students displaying "Tide Pride" formed the notorious Crimson Crazies in 2005. Created by Joe "The Godfather" Bisson and other students, the Crazies are based on a similar group from Duke University. The Crazies are identified by their crimson shirts and sweatshirts, rigorous cheers, and loud antics. The community has come to embrace the Crimson Crazies as an unofficial cheering section known to raise spirits and bring fans to their feet. With the departure of the founding Crazies, a decline in membership was seen, but not a decline in spirit. Many Crazies can be seen sporting their shirts on any given day, sparking rumors that the Crazies may seek club status and may organize into a student-run "spirit team" to actively (and with sportsmanlike conduct) rally support and "Restore the Pride in the Tide."[citation needed]

[edit] The Friday Show

In the 2004-2005 school year, a student-produced news program known as "The Friday Show" emerged. There were senior crew members as well as two senior anchors. In the 2005-2006 season, upon the departure of the founding cast and crew, a new lineup of multiple anchors and correspondents came to take over the show. This version was not as popular as the original and did not do very well, fizzling out after a few episodes. The 2006-2007 school year saw a total lack of the program altogether. In 2007-2008, a new incarnation of the show emerged. The highly successful revival of the show saw the rise of two new senior anchors with many humorous new segments such as interviews, pranks, awards, news segments, rants, and hilarious opening sketches. This season has been highly successful and well-received by both the school and the community. Past episodes of the third season air on Youtube.com and can be found by searching SHSFridayShow. A feature-length film called "The Friday Show: The Movie" is set to premiere on Friday, May 30th, 2008.

[edit] Drama

Spaulding High School also boasts an impressive Drama Club, having recently performed such classics as Disney's Beauty and the Beast, The Mikado, and Into the Woods. For thirty years, known within the school as "The Golden Age of SHS Drama", Illene Gillander masterfully directed musicals, plays, and musical revues for the SHS stage. In 2005, she directed her final show with the SHS Drama Club, Beauty and the Beast. Since her departure, Tom Blachly of Marshfield has stepped into the shoes of artistic director. Whereas Gillander was a fan of large casts, moving musicals, and well-known shows, Blachly is renowned for his love of obscure, heady, small-cast shows. Due to controversy surrounding previous productions, Blachly's contract as Drama Coach has not been renewed for the 2007-2008 academic year. As of August 2007, Illene Gillander returned to SHS Drama to direct the Sondheim favorite, Into the Woods. It has been cast and has been in rehearsals since September 2007. It premiered (to great success) on December 6th, 2007. It is uncertain whether or not Gillander will return for a spring production. As of December 14th, 2007, Gillander has begun talks concerning a Spring 2008 production. A meeting is to be held on December 19th to discuss possible shows and evaluate the feasibility of another musical production (considering the high cost of Into the Woods). As of December 19th, 2007 the spring production has been announced. It will be "An Evening of Comedic Murder Mysteries," a production including the one-act murder/comedies The Mystery of Mouldy Manor and The Attempted Murder of Peggy Sweetwater.

[edit] Rush Limbaugh incident

In late April or early May of 2003, a uniformed police officer, John Mott, entered Room 211 of Spaulding High School at 1:30 in the morning and took pictures of a student's project On Iraq for a Public Issues Class taught by Tom Treece. The project showed a picture of President George Bush with duct tape over his mouth, and a caption that said "Put your duct tape to good use. Shut your mouth." These pictures were sent to Rush Limbaugh, and discussed by him and eventually posted on his website. [2] [3] [4]
