Spaugstofan is a weekly Icelandic Saturday night sketch comedy show hat has been broadcast, with breaks, on public television channel Sjónvarpið since 1989. It's the highest rated show on Icelandic television. Generally, the sketches focus on showing the public events of the past week in a humorous light, or the exploits of recurring characters in the show. The cast of Spaugstofan is comprised of actors Örn Árnason, Karl Ágúst Úlfsson, Pálmi Gestsson and Sigurður Sigurjónsson. Randver Þorláksson was a part of the original cast but left it before the 2007-2008 season. Before Randver left, the line-up had remained more or less unchanged since the genesis of the program. Randvers leaving the program proved very controversial in Iceland, especially as he made it clear he was not resigning of his own will and no public reason was given other than that it would make room for new guest actors each episode.
