"Spank Thru" is a Fecal Matter song and, according to Krist Novoselic, the first ever Nirvana song. It was first recorded for the Illiteracy Will Prevail demo in December 1985. As of 2006 it remains the only unreleased song from the Dale Crover-sessions (January 23, 1988 at Reciprocal Recording Studios in Seattle). Another studio version, rerecorded with Chad Channing on drums, was released in 1988 on a vinyl LP box set of bands on the Sub Pop label. The box set was called Sub Pop 200. The 3xEP box set was released in December 1988. CD versions were first released in 1990 and there are three versions of Sub Pop's American CD.

A version on Outcesticide recorded at Reciprocal Recording Studios, Seattle, WA; January 23, 1988
The supposed Fecal Matter version was released on Outcesticide IV; however, this version was not what it claimed, as the Illiteracy Will Prevail version by Fecal Matter was released on Nirvana's Sliver: The Best of the Box on November 1, 2005. This version of "Spank Thru" has great significance in Nirvana's history, as former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic has stated it was hearing this song on the demo that convinced him to start a band with Cobain, thus founding the band that would later be known as Nirvana. Many fans hope the entire Fecal Matter demo will eventually be officially released.
[edit] Theme
The real theme of this song is mockery of love and using masturbation as a substitute when you can't find anyone to have sex with you]]. Such lyrics as "We'll be together once again my love I need you back oh baby baby" and "I can spank it, I can beat it, masturbate it" make this theme known.
