Spackenkill High School is a[edit] History
Before Spackenkill High School, or SHS, was established in 1973, a referendum was needed to be passed, as residents of the area disliked the idea of their children transferring to Poughkeepsie High School after graduating from Orville A. Todd Middle School. Though the proposition was questioned, the majority of the residents passed it to purchase land for a high school, a necessity for the fast-growing Spackenkill School District. Construction began in 1970, and ended in 1973, beginning Spackenkill High School's school career. The first class graduated in 1974.In the beginning of 2007 school year, a teacher was found having sex with a student. Investigation in still in progress for the legitimacy of the student's claims.
[edit] Athletics
Spackenkill High School's teams are known as the Spartans. They play in Section IX of the NYSPHSAA, and are a class B school.
Spackenkill is best known for its outstanding soccer teams. The boys' team has not had a regular season loss in the last two years, compiling a 62-5-1 record from 2005-2007 under head coach Manny Blanco. In 2005, the Spartan boys' soccer team advanced to the State Final for the first time in school history. After losing in the state quarterfinal after an undefeated season in 2006, the majority of the team returned in 2007.
In 2007, they were consistently ranked number one in the state, and beat powerhouses in higher classes, including Lakeland and eventual Class A champions Byram Hills. On November 10, 2007, the soccer team won the Class B Capital Region title, defeating Hastings 2-1. [1] They then defeated Mattituck High School on November 17 to advance to the state finals [2]. Spackenkill continued to win and captured the 2007 New York State Class B Championship on November 18 at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta, NY, defeating Plattsburgh High School 1-0 [3].
The girls' soccer team is also a very good squad and regularly competes in sectionals. In 2007, they were ousted in the Section IX semifinals in overtime. This was the best year for the Lady Spartans in over a decade, compiling only three losses during the regular season.
