Could be wrong but I think the origin of the ribbon colours is from the WWII Atlantic star ribbon. BennyTec (talk) 18:22, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

This link alluded to that as well. I'd love to find a source about who designed it and why they chose those colours (we all know, but without a source it's just OR unfortunately) Ryan4314 (talk) 18:45, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
