Souvenir de Hapsal

Souvenir de Hapsal were three pieces written for the piano by Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, it was his first cycle of piano pieces. [1]

The Souvenir de Hapsal cycle was written during Tchaikovsky's stay in Hapsal, which was not a bad place to stay according to the composer himself. He stayed there with his brother Modest Tchaikovsky and Anatolii Tchaikovsky as well as part of the Davydova family. He dedicated this work to Vera Davydova. It was composed in 1867.[2]

Souvenir de Hapsal consists of three pieces for the piano:[3]

  • Ruines d'un Chateau, written in E major
  • Scherzo, written in F major
  • Chant sans Paroles, written in F major

The Scherzo was first performed by Nikolai Grigoryevich Rubinstein on the 27th of February 1868.
