Southwest Jiaotong University [Chinese: 西南交通大学; Pinyin: xī'nán jiāotōng dàxué] is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in mainland China.
The university was originally founded at Shanhaiguan, Hebei in 1896, and it is currently located in Chengdu, Sichuan, a major city in the southwest part of the country. The University has three campuses: the main Xipu campus, the Jiulidi campus in downtown Chengdu, and Emei campus about 90 miles to the southwest of the city snuggled at the foot of the Mount Emei, one of China’s four sacred Buddhist mountains. The university offers programs at the graduate and undergraduate level to approximately 60,000 students.

With over 100 years of history, SWJTU has established a complete higher education system consisting of undergraduate, postgraduate, doctorate, continuing education and distant education programs. The university has 11 schools, 38 departments, 32 undergraduate specialties, master's programs in 58 fields, doctorate programs in twenty-four fields and six postdoctoral centers. There are around 23,000 students on campus now, SWJTU has a high-qualified staff with 1,400 teachers, including almost 900 professors and associate professors, three members of the Chinese Academy of Science, and two members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. There are also more than 100 visiting professors from other educational institutes within and outside China presently employed by the university. In its 100 years of steady development, SWJTU has cultivated over 70,000 engineers, technicians and managers; a few of the most notable being Mao Yisheng, Zhu Kezhen and Tung-Yen Lin. However, many other world-famous experts and scholars, including more than forty academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering have either studied or taught at the university. Further more, SWJTU is well known for its rigorous scholarship and has long been considered to be an excellent center of higher education pursued by many young students at home and abroad.
SWJTU is a center of both education and research. It has three key disciplines at the state level, and seventeen at the ministerial and provincial level. Eight of its disciplines are authorized to engage special professors under the Changjiang Scholar Plan. Located at the university are also 16 research institutes and 15 research institutes involved in cross disciplines. Traction Power Lab, the only key state laboratory of the national transportation system, is based at SWJTU. There are also 10 key laboratories at the ministerial level and another 66 teaching and research laboratories. The Modem Industry Technique Training Center and the National CAD Application Education and Training Center are located at the university as well. During the "Eighth Five-year Plan", over 180 scientific research projects have won prizes awarded by the state, the province and the Railway Ministry. Over 9,000 research papers have been published in academic journals within and outside the nation. SWJTU has established cooperative links with a large number of cities, enterprises, universities and research institutes. In addition to this, the network of SWJTU is now connected with the Internet. At the end of 2000, the first man-loading high-temperature superconducting maglev test vehicle in the world was born at SWJTU. At the exhibitions of great national achievements held in celebrations of the Fifteenth Representative Conference of Communist Party of China and the Fiftieth Anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the testing maglev train was highly regarded and very positively remarked upon by Jiang Zemin and other Party and State leader.
Located on the second ring road of Chengdu, SWJTU is less than two kilometers from the North Chengdu Railway Station and the Passenger Transportation Center. It is thus very convenient for foreign students and guests to get here. SWJTU covers an area of 1.69 square kilometres: the Chengdu campus consists of 760,000 square metres and the Emei campus 930,000 square metres. The total area of the school grounds is approximately 670,000 square meters. Both campuses feature beautiful environments and novel architecture. The Chengdu Campus is highlighted by the Zhan Tianyou Gymnasium and also includes a swimming pool and other standard sports grounds. Its library contains a collection of over 1,400,000 volumes and various periodicals and journals. The modern buildings all around the campus offer an excellent study environment for students.
In 2000, SWJTU passed undergraduate education evaluation of excellence the first time it had ever been held. And in 2001, the university passed the "211 Projects Test" held in conjunction with the " Ninth Five-Year Plan". These achievements serve as a beginning for a university that is dedicated to initiating new undertakings.The university will carry on the fine traditions and spirit displayed by its forerunners and will accelerate its development so as to make new contributions to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation!

- Mao Yisheng (茅以升) (Traditional Chinese: 茅以升; Hanyu Pinyin: Máo Yǐshēng; Wade-Giles: Mao2 Yi3-sheng1; January 9, 1896 - November 12, 1989) was as an expert on bridge construction and a social activist in China.
- Tung-Yen Lin (林同炎, pinyin: Lín Tóngyán) (November 14, 1912 – November 15, 2003) was a world-renowned structural engineer best known as the pioneer of standardizing the use of prestressed concrete.
Of all the fellows of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Academy of Engineering, more than 40 are alumni of Southwest Jiaotong University.
