Southgate is a neighborhood in Houston, Texas, United States.
Southgate is located inside the 610 Loop west of the Texas Medical Center and Rice University, north of Old Braeswood and Reliant Park, south of Rice Village, and east of the city of West University Place and the neighborhood of Braeswood Place. The neighborhood was originally filled with houses built in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, but a "tear-down" movement is gaining momentum, with over 100 new homes built in the last decade. The neighborhood is bordered by West Holcombe, Greenbriar, University, and Travis.
Southgate is in Texas's 7th congressional district [1].

The neighborhood commonly known as "Southgate" consists of over 600 residences in six subdivisions: Southgate, Southgate parts 2 and 3, Southgate Boulevard, Southgate Annex, and Southgate Multi-Family. Property values in Southgate, along with many other "inside the Loop" neighborhoods, have increased considerably in the first decade of the 2000's. Average property sale prices in Southgate are now regularly exceeding $200 per square foot of structure area. Traditionally, Southgate had been immune from the "West University phenomenon", where many/most original small homes have been demolished to make way for much larger homes. Tax records show that from 1995-2006, the rate of new construction in Southgate has increased considerably, with new homes built on fully 15% of the lots in Southgate.
