Southern University of Chile (Spanish: Universidad Austral de Chile) is a public coeducational research university in Chile based in Valdivia although it has some institutions and careers in Puerto Montt. Founded by decree on 7 September 1954 it is one of the seven original Chilean Traditional Universities. The university hosts arguably the most important film festival in Chile, the Valdivia International Film Festival. University scientists have also contributed to the research of the Monte Verde archaeological site done by Tom Dillehay and Mario Pino.
