Southern Nazarene University features 17 varsity sports teams. Both men's and women's teams compete as the Crimson Storm. In 1999 the Crimson Storm replaced the Redskin as the mascot. In 2003, SNU debut Thundercat as the mascot. SNU participates in the NAIA's Division I, Region VI in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The University's current athletic director is Bobby Martin, and the SNU Sports Information Director is Scott Secor [1]. The "voice" (public address) of the Crimson Storm is Ty McCarthy[2]. The main facilities SNU has for athletics are Sawyer Center (Volleyball, Basketball, Indoor Track), Cypert Complex (Softball, Baseball), Wanda Rhodes Complex (Soccer), SNU Memorial Stadium (Football)[3]. SNU Sports Information hosts the annual SNUPY Awards every spring.

On April 23, 2008, the Crimson Storm upset the NCAA Division I Oklahoma Sooners 8-1.

Although not recognized by the NAIA as a core sport, SNU has an equestrian team that competes in various horse shows and rodeos throughout the year.

The Crimson Storm Football team was established in 2000. In 2008 SNU won it's first season opener.
