Southern Federal University is a university in the Rostov oblast, Russia. It was established in 2006, when Rostov State Pedagogical University, Rostov State Academy of Architecture and Art, Taganrog State University of Radioengineering, and Rostov State University were combined to form one of two new federal universities in Russia. The former rector of Taganrog State University of Radioengineering, Vladislav Zakharevich, has been appointed Southern Federal's first rector, and the former rector of Rostov State University, Alexander Belokon, has been appointed SFU's first president.[1]

The department of military training is not a department in strict sense, it offers optional military training course for students from the other departments; now, according to the order of the Ministry of Defence no new students are allowed and upon graduation of its last students it will be closed.
