The South West District Football League was formed in 1981 being renamed from the Portland Port Fairy Football League (formed in 1970). Previous names for the league were the Portland And District Football League (from 1955) and the Heywood And District Football League (from 1925, in recess 1941-4). Dartmoor, Tyrendarra, and Westerns have participated continuously since 1946 in these leagues. [1]
7 of the current 8 teams were present in the league on formation in 1981 (Branxholme and Wallacedale as separate teams) plus Bessiebelle (left 1998) Macarthur (left 1997) Merino-Digby (left 1981) and Pigeon Ponds (left 1983).
