South Pier is one of three piers in the town of Blackpool, England. The pier contains many amusement rides, such as dogems, a Waltzer and Crazy Mouse ride.[1]
[edit] History
Work began on South Pier in 1892. It was constructed using a different method to the other two piers, the Worthington Screwpile System.[2] South pier opened in 1893 as Victoria Pier. It was renamed South Pier in 1930.[3] The pier originally included 36 shops, a bandstand, an ice-cream vendor and a photograph stall. On 20th May 1893 the Grand Pavilion was opened, with a capacity of 3000. In 1938 the entrance to the pier was widened, and the Regal Pavilion was created. This was converted into an amusement arcade in 1963.
[edit] Damage
The pier has suffered damage over the years. In 1958 a fire damaged the Grand Pavilion, followed by a further fire in 1964 which completely destroyed the pavilion.[2] It was replaced with a theatre. This theatre has since been demolished and replaced by a ride in 1998.[2]
