South Morang is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Its Local Government Area is the City of Whittlesea. The state government made an election promise in 1999 that it would extend the Epping line to South Morang by 2003, bringing a train service to this growing suburb for the first time since the Whittlesea line was closed in 1959, however the government later changed this, saying it might be reconsidered by 2021. As a result of this, residents came together to form the South Morang Rail Alliance to lobby the Labor State Government to extend the railway from Epping as they promised. In 2006, the Liberal and Greens opposition parties promised the extension in their first term, which was well received by many locals. However, with the retention of a Labor member at the 2006 election, the future of this rail extension is in doubt once again. In the late 1990s/early 2000s South Morang grew from a country area on the outskirts of Melbourne to a suburban area with new estates getting built like the Mill Park Lakes estate.
Westfield Plenty Valley Shopping Centre is Now open in the south of the suburb, its contains Coles, Safeway(Plent valley) and Aldi supermarkets, K-Mart and Target department stores and other speciality outlets including Priceline, Rebel Sport and Cafe's/Restaurant's.
Safeway South Morang is located on Plenty Road at the Rivergum shopping mall which is opposite Bunnings Mill Park

May 22 2008 Westfield Plenty Valley opened their doors for more then 85,000 shoppers on the Thursday extending there trading hours to 12am Massive crowds gathered around for festivities and local stars like Actors from the hit TV soap Neighbours strolling around the shops signing autographs and taking photos.
At store opening shop staff was shocked to see the inside of the shopping centre clean after seeing 12 hours earlier of total chaos and last minute touches being complete and the 600 seat food court was in action.
Frustration of finding a car park got to much for some (including staff members) in which for whom parked anywhere and everywhere turning the once “Quiet” McDonalds Road into gridlock.
