South Middle School (SMS) is a school in Arlington Heights School District 25, in Arlington Heights Illinois. Grades 6 through 8 are taught at South. The school's current building was constructed in 1997. It is the second building the school has been housed in. It consists of a 900 student body with about 300 students per grade. South Middle School's rival school,Thomas Middle School,is also in Arlington Heights School District 25. Some of South's graduates go to Prospect High School, and some go to Rolling Meadows High School; both high schools are in district 214. Students entering 6th grade come from Windsor, Dryden, and Westgate elementary schools.

South Middle School has received high rankings state and national Science Olympiad competitions since the early 1990's. Recently they placed 38th in the National science olypiad competition. In 2008, South placed first in the Illinois State Science Olympiad Tournament.
