[edit] History

As the Alma Mater says, the hope and pride of South Miami Senior opened its doors to students for the first time on November 10, 1971. The original student body selected the Cobra mascot and the school colors of orange, brown, and white. Today the Cobra mascot reigns from our third story roof, greeting all who pass by "Cobra Country" on Miller Road.

Since opening, South Miami has had five principals: Dr. Warren G. Burchell, Ms. Judy Weiner, Mr. Thomas L. Shaw, Mr. Eugene Butler, Mr. Craig Speziale, and now Mr. Gilberto Bonce. Dr. Burchell has been the longest serving principal in South Miami Senior High history, serving 22 years.

In 1994, Mr. Thomas L. Shaw came to South Miami Senior High and brought with him a whole new era of curriculum and technological innovation. Guided by his vision, South Miami High has become one of the top educational institutions inMiami-Dade County Public Schools with its change from providing just one magnet program, to becoming a full-fledged magnet school, the South Miami School of the Arts. Academic departments have now given way to Academies and old telephone lines to an interactive Local and Wide Area Networking.

Today, Mr. Bonce leads South Miami Senior through the changes and challenges mentioned in the school song. Through his leadership greatness lies ahead for South Miami Senior High.

[edit] Uniforms

On April 15, 2008, the Miami-Dade County School Board proposed the school to have uniforms for the 2008-2009 school year. Days later, a letter was sent to each student's household where the parents and guardians voted in favor or against. By the end of the month it was decided that the school would have uniforms for the 2008-2009 school year. The Uniform Policy is as follows:

Shirts: Shirts may be polo or oxford style and must have a collar. Shirts must be tucked-in. Undergarments must not be visible. Shirts must have sleeves (short or long). Mid-drifts cannot be exposed. Students may use striped or solid colored shirts within the allowed color scheme.

Pants: Pants may be a full-length pant styled or a Capri-styled pant which fall below the knee. No shorts are allowed. Pants must be worn on the waist and must be accompanied by a belt.

Shoes: Students cannot wear open shoes and shoes must have backs (i.e. no sandal styles shoes without strap)

Other: Hats, scarves and hooded garments are not to be used during the school day. School emblem patches and badges may be placed on student shirts.

Colors: Shirts should be white, orange, or brown and pants Khaki or brown.[1]
