[edit] Campus Development

The South Medford campus is home to Spiegelberg stadium (9,250 seat capacity). Both South Medford and North Medford High School share the stadium for football. Additionally, local athletic clubs use the turf field, and the space is rented out for community events such as Relay for Life. More currently, 2008 is the first year in South Medford High School history that senior graduation will be held outdoors in the stadium, rather than indoors in the gymnasium.[1]

In 2004, FieldTurf, a state-of-the-art surface commonly used on professional and college fields, was installed, and the surrounding track was resurfaced. The $700,000 privately funded project was spearheaded by Ed Singler, president of the Linebackers Club.[2]

In 2006, the voters of Medford approved bond measure 15-73 to give the 549C district $189 million to repair or replace all of its schools. Currently in the planning phase, South High is tentatively scheduled to relocate to a new campus in 2010. The old building will remain in use as an interim campus for elementary schools undergoing repair.[citation needed]

[edit] Small School Initiative

In 2004-2005 school year, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation selected South Medford High as part of their Small School Initiative program. Over the course of the next three years, the staff of South Medford toured various other high schools across the nation to determine the exact manner in which to implement the program. Starting in the school year of 2006-2007, South Medford began the SSI with the "Freshman Academy," following it with the other programs in 2007-2008.[citation needed]

[edit] Student Leadership

South Medford High School is represented by a student government, which is elected newly every year. Each class has a Treasurer, Secretary, Vice President, and President. In addition to the class officers, South Medford is represented by four associated student body officers. Each school year, the student leadership of South Medford chooses a theme to impassion students with school spirit. Recent theme titles include: Mission: Possible, Not Just Heroes: Superheroes, and We Rock! Let's Roll. The current theme for the 2007 to 2008 school year is Finding the Treasure Within.
