South Harrison Township is a township in Gloucester County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the township population was 2,417.

South Harrison was formed as a township by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 2, 1883, from portions of Harrison Township. Elk Township was formed from portions of South Harrison Township on April 17, 1891.[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 15.8 square miles (41.0 km²), of which, 15.8 square miles (40.9 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.13%) is water.

South Harrison Township borders Woolwich Township, Harrison Township, Elk Township, and Salem County.

}} As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,417 people, 800 households, and 663 families residing in the township. The population density was 153.0 people per square mile (59.1/km²). There were 829 housing units at an average density of 52.5/sq mi (20.3/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 93.09% White, 3.76% African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.19% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.43% of the population.

There were 800 households out of which 41.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.9% were married couples living together, 7.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.1% were non-families. 13.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.94 and the average family size was 3.25.

In the township the population was spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 27.8% from 45 to 64, and 9.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 102.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.7 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $68,491, and the median income for a family was $76,390. Males had a median income of $55,313 versus $32,337 for females. The per capita income for the township was $25,968. About 4.1% of families and 8.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.7% of those under age 18 and 8.0% of those age 65 or over.

Members of the South Harrison Township Committee are Mayor Charles Tyson, Deputy Mayor Robert Campbell, Jim McCall, Neil McIntyre and Gary Spinner.[7]

[edit] Federal, state and county representation

South Harrison Township is in the Second Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 3rd Legislative District.[8]

New Jersey's Second Congressional District, covering all of Atlantic County, Cape May County, Cumberland County and Salem County and portions of Burlington County, Camden County and Gloucester County, is represented by Frank LoBiondo (R, Ventnor). New Jersey is represented in the Senate by Frank Lautenberg (D, Cliffside Park) and Bob Menendez (D, Hoboken).

The 3rd legislative district of the New Jersey Legislature is represented in the State Senate by Stephen M. Sweeney (D, Thorofare) and in the Assembly by John J. Burzichelli (D, Thorofare) and Douglas H. Fisher (D, Thorofare).[9] The Governor of New Jersey is Jon Corzine (D, Hoboken).[10]

Gloucester County is governed by a seven-member Board of Chosen Freeholders, elected to three-year terms on a staggered basis, with two or three seats coming up for election each year. Each year, the Board selects a Freeholder Director and Deputy Director from among its members. As of 2008, Gloucester County's Freeholders are Freeholder Director Stephen M. Sweeney (D, West Deptford Township, term ends December 31, 2008), Deputy Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger (D, West Deptford Township, 2009), Joseph A. Brigandi, Jr., (D, Glassboro, 2010), Jean DuBois (D, Mantua Township, 2010), Giuseppe "Joe" Chila (D, Woolwich Township, 2009), Frank J. DiMarco (D, Deptford Township, 2008) and Dr. Warren S. Wallace (D, Washington Township, 2008).[11]

Public school students in grades K-6 attend the South Harrison Township Elementary School, which had an enrollment of 288 students as of the 2005-06 school year.[12]

For grades 7-12, public school students are educated by the Kingsway Regional School District. The district serves students from East Greenwich Township, Logan Township, South Harrison Township, Swedesboro and Woolwich Township.[13] Schools in the district are Kingsway Regional Middle School and Kingsway Regional High School.
