[edit] History

South Dakota 36 was implemented in 1926. At that time, it continued further west to the Wyoming border, utilizing the current route of U.S. 16A to Custer, and U.S. Highway 16 west of Custer; U.S. 16 went northwest from Rapid City. The western terminus was pulled back to its present location around 1935, when U.S. 16 was rerouted southwest through the Black Hills.

In 1933 and 1934, this route was also part of U.S. Highway 216, which then continued north to Rapid City.
