South Chicago Heights is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,970 at the 2000 census.

South Chicago Heights is located at 41°29′0″N, 87°38′15″W (41.483375, -87.637461)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.5 square miles (4.0 km²), of which, 1.5 square miles (4.0 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (1.29%) is water.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 3,970 people, 1,570 households, and 1,026 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,586.1 people per square mile (995.3/km²). There were 1,628 housing units at an average density of 1,060.5/sq mi (408.2/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 79.14% White, 7.25% African American, 0.50% Native American, 1.06% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 8.97% from other races, and 3.02% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 18.09% of the population.

There were 1,570 households out of which 27.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.7% were married couples living together, 11.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.05.

In the village the population was spread out with 22.0% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.5 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $39,639, and the median income for a family was $49,279. Males had a median income of $37,078 versus $25,919 for females. The per capita income for the village was $18,179. About 3.2% of families and 6.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.4% of those under age 18 and 10.2% of those age 65 or over.
