South Abington Township is a township in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 8,638 at the 2000 census. The town is sometimes referenced to as Chinchilla.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 9.1 square miles (23.6 km²), of which, 9.0 square miles (23.2 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.4 km²) of it (1.54%) is water.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 8,638 people, 2,936 households, and 2,207 families residing in the township. The population density was 963.3 people per square mile (371.8/km²). There were 3,062 housing units at an average density of 341.5/sq mi (131.8/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 96.24% White, 0.73% African American, 0.03% Native American, 2.26% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.09% of the population.

There were 2,936 households out of which 38.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.7% were married couples living together, 5.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.8% were non-families. 21.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.20.

In the township the population was spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.5 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $58,504, and the median income for a family was $66,635. Males had a median income of $46,754 versus $32,981 for females. The per capita income for the township was $27,382. About 2.1% of families and 2.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.6% of those under age 18 and 3.1% of those age 65 or over.
