Soundwaves Festival

Soundwaves Festival was founded by composers Patrick Harrex and Claudia Molitor in 2006, and the first festival took place in Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, England in June 2007. Soundwaves Festival aims to showcase contemporary classical music composed in the 21st century, and involves both amateur and professional performers. The festival focuses on staging premieres, and on new and experimental performance.

Soundwaves Festival 2007 included more than a dozen world or UK premieres. These included the world premiere of Martha Gunn by Michael Finnissy which was performed in a beach hut in Hove. The Fidelio Trio gave the UK premiere of Trio Concerto by South African Kevin Volans. The University of Sussex 21st Century Music Ensemble premiered music by Sussex composers Patrick Harrex, Joanna Marlow, Zoe Searle-Barnes, Elizabeth Walling, Matthew Pollard and Sam Hayden. A concert by Talkestra included UK premieres by Matthew Hindson and Derek Bermel.

Violinist Peter Sheppard Skærved and pianist Aaron Shorr performed music for violin and piano by Turkish and British composers, following on from their work with the British Council which started in 2002. This work aims to bring British and Turkish composers and students together.[1].

The Kürbis Ensemble celebrated Howard Skempton's 60th birthday, playing his music alongside works by Morton Feldman and Cornelius Cardew.

Warp Records signings Alexander's Annexe performed at the Old Market, Hove. In an Alexander's Annexe performance, Sarah Nicolls plays the piano whilst electronica artist Mira Calix and sound designer David Sheppard process her music through electronic instruments. [2]

Composers' collective New Music Brighton worked with percussion ensemble Brake Drum Assembly, founded by Ensemble Bash's Chris Brannick.

Students from Boundstone Community College, Lancing performed in a concert featuring the ensemble Lontano, which included a premier of work by Dorothy Ker.

The festival also included performances by vocal ensemble EXAUDI, the Ben Oliver Quartet and Norwegian band Fat Battery.

Soundwaves Festival 2008 will take place between 21-29 June, in venues in Brighton and Hove, and will include a concert of music written by a visual artist, installation work by sonic artists, film installations, electronic and live performance events, and a spoken word and music evening.
