- Burmese anti-government protests:
- Foreign Minister Nyan Win addresses the United Nations General Assembly, blaming "political opportunists" for escalating what had been protests by a small group of activists. The junta's security forces exercised "utmost restraint" and stepped in only after "the mob became unruly and provocative", Nyan Win said. "Normalcy has now returned to Myanmar," he added. (BBC)
- A Thailand-based rights group, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, says more than 1,000 activists, including monks and students, are missing in Myanmar, and are believed to have been arrested. (The Nation)
- General Sonthi Boonyaratglin, leader of the 2006 Thai coup d'état, resigns as chairman of the Council for National Security. Sonthi has also retired as chief the Royal Thai Army, and will accept a position in the cabinet of Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont as deputy prime minister. - A transport safety committee report blames the pilot for the fiery crash of Garuda Indonesia Flight 200, in which 21 people were killed in March in Yogyakarta. The report said the pilot ignored 15 warnings as he descended too rapidly. (Reuters)

- Two Cambodian airlines, PMTair and Imtrec Aviation, have been ordered to ground a total of four of their Antonov cargo planes, pending a safety investigation. The order, affecting three Antonov An-12s and one An-26, follows the crash last week of an Imtrec An-12. PMTair also flies An-24 passenger planes, one of which crashed in June, but those are not affected by the grounding. (AP via IHT)
- Police continue to investigate the deadly explosion at the Glorietta mall in Makati City, and say it might have been caused by a gas leak, though a bomb has not been ruled out. At least 11 people were killed in the blast.(Thomson via Forbes)
- Singapore legalizes oral sex and anal sex between heterosexual couples, but retains a law that criminalizes sexual intercourse between gay men. (NEWS.com)
- A woman is killed and five people injured on a log flume at Siam Park in suburban Bangkok. The park said a sudden power cut caused a water pump to fail, which in turn caused the log ride to crash at the end of a slide with no water to cushion the impact. (Nation)
- Vietnam says it will release more than 8,000 prisoners as part of its regular presidential amnesty. (NDTV)
