The Association of Southeast Asian Nations agrees on a landmark draft charter, which includes a provision to set up a human-rights commission. The charter is up for formal adoption at the ASEAN summit in November.
The new National Parliament of East Timor is sworn in. None of the 14 parties in last month's election won an absolute majority of seats. FRETILIN, headed by former prime minister Mari Alkatiri won just 21 seats, while the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction, headed by former president Xanana Gusmão, won 18, but has allied with smaller parties and is seeking to form a coalition government with 37 seats.
Khang Khek Ieu, former head of the Khmer Rouge's notorious S-21 prison, is charged with crimes against humanity by the Khmer Rouge Tribunal.

The 2007 AFC Asian Cup is being held from July 7 to 29, and is hosted for the first time by four countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.
Former Royal Lao Army general Vang Pao, held in California on charges related to an attempted coup in Laos, is freed on bail.
The Malaysian High Court dismisses a 100 million ringgit defamation lawsuit filed by former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim against former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad.

Thai border authorities bar entry to around 400 Karenni, who were seeking to cross into Mae Hong Son Province.
