- Former Thai foreign minister Surin Pitsuwan is appointed secretary general of ASEAN, to succeed Singapore's Ong Keng Yong on January 1, 2008. Singapore assumes chairmanship of the regional grouping, succeeding the Philippines.
- Xanana Gusmão is appointed Prime Minister of East Timor over Mari Alkatiri, sparking violent protests by supporters of FRETILIN, the former ruling party.
- Judges begin hearing a civil suit against former Indonesian President Suharto (pictured) that aims to recover state funds said to have vanished during his rule. Prosecutors are seeking US$440 million (£219 million) they say disappeared from a scholarship fund, and a further $1.1 billion in damages.
- Jose Maria Sison, founder of the Communist Party of the Philippines and its armed wing, the New People's Army, is arrested in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
- A tropical storm causes flooding in Vietnam, causing at least 40 deaths and inundating 200,000 homes. The hardest hit is Dak Lak Province, where 11 people were swept away, officials said.
- An increase in fuel prices causes protests in Yangon and other cities in Myanmar, with the demonstrations quickly quelled by the State Peace and Development Council.
