Re-enactment of the first operation under anesthesia (ether). The actual operation took place on October 16, 1846; this re-enactment took place shortly afterwards. Daguerrotype by the famed en:Southworth & Hawes partnership of Boston. Alas this image is not as good as many of their surviving works. This image is from the Library of Congress online collection, with information given below, and has long since passed into the public domain.

SUMMARY: Scene believed to be a re-enactment of the demonstration of ether anesthesia by W.T.G. Morton on October 16, 1846. Mr. Holman with surgeons: John Mason Warren, George Hayward, Solomon D. Townsend, John Collins Warren and James Johnson around man on operating table.

Believe the author of this may have been a Frearson, or Frearson Brothers of Norseman, Dundas, Western Australia who had the first newspaper there. Also had newspaper in King Street, Adelaide where other family operated doing maps. Some brothers moved to Norseman 1890's and settled there some 18 years. Septimus Frearson was a Councillor of the Shire of Dundas at the time of proposed recession with newspaper articles related to visit by Premier John Forrest.
