michael oblowitz was born in cape town, south africa. he received a ba degree in fine art from the university of cape town and a masters in fine art in film from columbia university, new york city. in the early 1980's he produced and directed one of the first rap videos on mtv...kurtis blow/basketball...he has directed numerous award winning commercials, music documentaries and music videos working with major musicians like eric clapton, carole king, john lee hooker, carlos santana, brookes and dunn, alan jackson, garth brooks, shania twain, jeff beck, buddy guy etc... he directed his first feature: king blank in 1982. it was shown in festivals all over the world, premiered at the edinburgh film festival.distributed in britain and europe by the british film institute and the institute for contemporary art and in new york city, it was part of the new york, no wave film series at the whitney museum in 1998, it was shown during the 1980's at the waverly theatre in new york in a double feature with eraserhead. oblowitz directed the adaptation of the jim thompson novel, this world and the fireworks in 1997.it was an official entrant at both the sundance film festival and the cannes film festival, critics week...he has directed many other features and documentaries...and lives in the usa when he is not surfing in hawaii and indonesia
