"Sorry But I'm Gonna Have To Pass" was a song written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, and recorded by The Coasters in 1958.
The song is told as a monologue by a man being propositioned by a woman in a bar, and details his polite refusal :
Some three or four years ago
Well, maybe yes, maybe no
But honey, don't bother
A husband and a father
Sorry, but I'm gonna have to pass
The lead vocal was sung by the Coasters bass singer, Will "Dub" Jones with suitably weary resignation. "Sorry But I'm Gonna Have To Pass" was released on the B-side of "The Shadow Knows" in September 1958. In 1994, the song reached a new audience in the UK when it was included in a Volkswagen commercial, and reached #41 in the UK Singles Chart as a result.
