[edit] Purpose

What is the purpose of this novel, not including Sophie and her life. The universal message?

Does anyone else find Sophie's name symbolic or is it just a wacky coincidence? Sophie, from the Greek sophia, meaning wisdom, and the source of the second half of the word philosophy, along with Amundsen, perhaps from the explorer Roald Amundsen?

In the novel, Gaarder reveals that sophia is Greek for wisdom - there are also several 'coincidences' such as her age, Hilde's name etc. throughout - I fully expect this was done purposefully --86.131.75.146 17:58, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Purpose

I believe the purpose of the novel; is to get people to question...everything!

Anyone know where I can purchase the movie if its not in english; then with english subtitles at least?

Thanks, amber[rest of email removed to prevent spammers finding it Phileas 15:37, 14 August 2007 (UTC)]

The purpose of the novel is to give the reader an understandable overview over the different philosophical epochs and approaches. Sophie's story (the "fiction" part) is well separated from the philosophy part, so that it is possible to jump pages and concentrate on the "non-fiction" part, if the reader wishes to do that. It is one of the rare books that makes philosophy "readable" for the wide audience (my personal view).

This book is opening my eyes to the views philosophers and the reasoning for earth's being. Even though I am of Christian faith, I am intrigued to ask: If god created the heavens and the earth, who created God?

i have gained plenty of fresh ideas which created my new point of views in life.. its merely an important thing for is to be fully aware of what really is the only truth behind our existence.. i read the novel and it was tremendously entertaining.,it was really worth time spending!!

[edit] Game?

eeggs.com has an easter egg for game called 'sophie's world.'

[edit] Google Results

This may be a little out there and I have no idea how to do this, but could someone change the page somehow so that the description of this page doesn't give away the main spoiler when "Sophie's World" is searched for on Google? Shralk 02:05, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Ouch! I kludged a solution that should be reflected in Google when they refresh their information on this page. --Kizor 12:59, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Criticism subsection

Ayn Rand can hardly be considered an important philosopher, important writer yes, but important philosopher, when compared with a great many others who were omitted from the book? No chance.

Not to mention that the author is kind of on the wrong continent to enjoy the fruits of Rands' labor. She's apparently a US thing. --Kizor 11:38, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
