[edit] Possible error in Jewish Encyclopedia
The Jewish Encyclopedia (1901-1906) says that "In 1882 she went to New York, where she appeared first at the Rumanian Opera-House, then at the Oriental Theater. In 1902 she established there, in conjunction with other actors, the Grand Theater." I don't believe the Rumanian Opera-House existed in 1882; I believe Sigmund Mogulescu founded it, and he didn't settle in New York until 1886 or 1887. This also seems unlikely because I'm pretty sure she was with Goldfaden in Russia until at least 1882, and I thought 1883, then played in Galicia and Germany, then back to Romania where she married Max Karp, before coming to America. (That's based on Bercovici, but seems consistent with most of what the Jewish Encyclopedia itself says.) I suspect they have the theater names right, but the date of her arrival wrong. -- Jmabel | Talk 09:51, Jan 15, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Rosenfeld
In her commentary in A Life on the Stage: A Memoir, page 86, Lulla Rosenfeld gives Karp's original first name as "Soore" rather than "Sara", and indicates that it was an entire year before she ran away to marry Sokher Goldstein; by that time, Goldstein had left Goldfaden and was with Israel Grodner's troupe in Iaşi. Also, Rosenfeld says she came to America in 1884, which would seem to flat-out contradict Bercovici on her marrying Max Karp (whose name Rosenfeld gives, definitely erroneously, as "Karb") in Iaşi around that time. Rosenfeld usually knows her stuff, but I'm more inclined to believe Bercovici on matters in Romania (except where it seems like there would be a communist-era political agenda), especially because his book (which I don't have in front of me now) seemed pretty careful in its use of sources, and Rosenfeld really doesn't indicate the sources for her commentary on Adler's memoir. -- Jmabel | Talk 02:40, Jan 30, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Enikel mistranslation?
A petty point but I believe it translates to 'nephew' not granddaughter. Israel Segal
