Sophie Thompson (born 1 January 1962) is an award-winning British actress, perhaps best known for playing Stella Crawford in EastEnders.

Thompson has worked in film, television, theatre and radio, and has narrated a number of audiobooks. Thompson made her debut at 16, and then went on to study at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
She had a starring role alongside popular British comedians, including Jack Dee in Jonathan Creek and Lee Evans in his sitcom So What Now? She has also starred on television in Persuasion, Midsommer Murders, A Harlot's Progress, Magnolia and as Miss Bartlett in Andrew Davies' 2007 adaptation of E.M. Forster's A Room with a View. In the West End she played Amy in the 1996 revival of Stephen Sondheim's Company, which was filmed for broadcast on the BBC.
In 1999 Thompson won an Olivier Award for her performance in Into The Woods. Thompson has had roles in many films including Four Weddings and a Funeral, Emma, Dancing at Lughnasa, Gosford Park, Fat Slags, Relative Values and the forthcoming Morris: A Life with Bells On.

Thompson played the role of child abuser Stella Crawford in the soap opera EastEnders. She came into the soap as Phil Mitchell's lawyer and they soon fell for each other. Stella later became jealous of Phil's relationship with his son Ben and began to emotionally and physically abuse him - becoming one of soaps most hated villains[citation needed]. Her character proved a big success with critics and the viewers. Her character is said to be a part of Eastenders' big turn around and it new success.[citation needed]. Thompson left EastEnders on 20th July 2007, after her character's evil ways were exposed on her wedding day and she committed suicide by jumping off a factory roof - landing on the wedding car.

Thompson was born in London, the daughter of actress Phyllida Law and actor Eric Thompson, and is the younger sister of two-time Academy Award winning actress-screenwriter Emma Thompson.
She has been married to actor Richard Lumsden since 1995. They have two children, Ernie James, born in 1997, and Walter Eric, born in 2000 She currently resides in London.[1] She now owns and runs a gift shop by the name of Fish on the Kentish Town Road in Kentish Town. Her favourite underwear is G-strings and says she is very used to being around sex toys after her husband brought some back from the set of Sugar Rush (TV series).
