The Sophia Jane

The Sophia Jane was the first paddle steamer to operate in Australian waters. She was built in England and arrived in Sydney in 1831.[1]

The Sophia Jane advertised the first Australian steamship cruise on 13 June in the Sydney Herald[2]

The Sophia Jane was a 256-ton schooner-rigged steamer. She was an auxiliary steamer, like all the early steamers, using her paddle wheels only when winds were inadequate or contrary.[3]
