Sophia Dussek

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sophia Dussek née Corri, later Moralt (b. Edinburgh, May 1, 1775; d. London, ca. 1831[1]) was a Scottish singer, pianist, harpist, and composer of Italian descent. In 1792, she married the composer Jan Ladislav Dussek. Only in the 20th C have her works appeared under her first husband's name, as the earlest edirions of the opus 2 sonatas (1796), appeared in the Corri-Dussek edition as by Madame Dussek. A later Paris edition appeared only under the name of "Dussek', and it was this edition used as a source for the 1953 Schott edition of the sonata in C minor that was misattributed by Nicanor Zabaleta. Following Jan's death in 1812, Sophia married the violist John Alvis Moralt. The couple lived in Paddington, where she founded a music school.

[edit] Notes

  1. ^ The date of 1847 usually given as her death date is actually that of her second husband's death. No death certificate for Sophia is extant, whereas there is a certificate from 1847 for J Moralt.
