Sonny Mayo (born Ronald Mayo Jr. in Washington, DC on July 16, 1971) is the former guitarist for Sevendust, and for Snot. After Snot disbanded in 1998, he joined Amen, as well as contributed all guitar parts to the Vanilla Ice album Hard to Swallow the same year. In 2003, he replaced Chad Benekos in Hed PE for the touring in support of the album Blackout. On January 19, 2005, he got a call from Morgan Rose to join Sevendust after Clint Lowery left for Dark New Day.[1] In October 2005, Sevendust released Next, their first studio album since Sonny joined the band. Mayo continued to write, record and perform with the band through 2007. In 2008, Sonny Mayo was replaced in Sevendust by original guitarist Clint Lowery. New information on the depature of Sonny Mayo was made avaiable through Sevendust's Myspace, stating:

"This was extremely tough considering Sonny is our brother and has been amazing to work with. He didn’t do anything wrong at all, we just owe it to ourselves and all the folks that grew up with us to put our original band back together. Clint has always been our brother and Sonny will always remain our brother as well. We are sorry to say goodbye to Sonny and I’m sure this will be tough on the fans that follow him, but we’re excited about reuniting the original lineup of Sevendust." Morgan Rose

"Everything happens for a reason. Sonny is an incredible person and we thank him for everything. Just like when you leave home, you come back! Hopefully everyone will understand the decision we have made. God bless you all. Welcome home Clint Lowery." LaJon Witherspoon

Before Snot, Sonny played in a DC Area (Virginia) band called MF Pitbulls (an earlier incarnation of Snot with Shannon Larkin on vocals). Prior to that, and for a good number of years, Sonny was in a local thrash band called Silence. Silence (John Mayes, Benjamin Gaither, Louie Denslow, Jason Robinson and Sonny), regularly sold out venues in the DC Metro area including the famous "Bayou" in Georgetown. While with Silence, he released a nine track CD, and recorded a 3 song tape with Alex Perialas. One of the songs from the tape, "One Race" was made into a black and white video filmed at the Bayou.
