Sonny Knowles

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sonny Knowles is one of Ireland's most famous singers for six decades running.

He was born in Dublin to Tommy and Mary Knowles. His singing is centered around showband and cabaret tunes. His early career began when he stumbled upon the clarinet and saxophone at the Dublin Music School. As a young man he joined the Johnny Butler Band followed by Earl Gill's Band, the Pacfic Showband and then Dermot O'Brien's showband. His decision to go solo at the peak of the caberet era, opened up his career and the rest is history.

Every kid in Ireland grew up to listening to Sonny Knowles singing on RTE television. He still draws crowds to this day at venues throughout the country.

His trademark mannerism of moving the palms of his hands in a clockwise motion while belting out a tune brings smiles and chuckles from every Irish person young and old. The audience goes to his performances to enjoy his silver smooth tones and a few sing-alongs.
