Soner Büyükatalay

Soner Büyükatalay (1979) is a Turkish mountaineer, who summited Mount Everest in 2006 along with three other teammates.

He was born on May 5, 1979 in Erzurum,Turkey. He received a BS and MS degrees in Electronic Engineering from the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, where he is currently a Ph.D student. Soner is employed as a researcher at the TUBITAK Information Technologies and Electronics Research Center. He is climbing mountains since 1997.

He summited on July 22, 2005, Gasherbrum II (8,035 m), the 14th highest peak of the world, with a Turkish team comprising six members.

On May 15, 2006, Soner successfully reached the top of Mount Everest (8,848m), the highest peak of the world, along with three other members of a Turkish expedition team of eleven climbers. The expedition, sponsored by Petrol Ofisi, was crowned by the summit of the first Turkish woman, Eylem Elif Maviş.
