Sonat Inc. was an American energy holding company, primarily involved in natural gas, oil and electric exploration and production. The company was headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama until it was acquired by El Paso Corporation in 1999 to maintain competition in the natural gas markets. At the time of the merger Sonat was a Fortune 500 company and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "SNT". It is now a division of El Paso. The company spun-off its offshore drilling unit as Sonat Offshore in the early 1990s. Southern Natural Gas is still headquarted in the Birmingham area.
