- Light gun
- First-person shooter (merge in Doom clone)

- Third-person shooter (One source found but still a very weak article)

- Vehicular combat game (Needs sourcing and clarifying, includes racing games though supposedly doesn't involve racing)
- Adventure game
- Music video game
- Party game
- Pinball
- Programming game
- Puzzle game (Currently at Video puzzle game, a term I've never seen used before. Ugh.)
- Simulation game (Needs to be brought back down, currently contains references to loads of genres)
- Life simulation game (merge Pet-raising simulation)
- Construction and management simulation games
- City-building game
- Economic simulation game
- God game (not sure this is the appropriate place for God games)
- Government simulation game
- Sports management game
- Vehicle simulation game
- Space trading and combat simulator
- Sports games
- Strategy video game
- Role-playing video game (Effectively at Role-playing game (video games) which has been split between Console role playing games and Computer role playing games)
- Roguelike
- Action role-playing game
- Massively multiplayer online role-playing game
- Tactical role-playing game
- Turn based role-playing game (IE the old action or turn-based system of classification, perhaps out of date?)
[edit] Suggested layout for List of video game types
- Adult video game
- Advergame
- Casual game (merge in Multiplayer Online Casual Game)
- Christian video games (Needs citing)
- Educational game
- Exergaming
- Global warming game
- Massively multiplayer online game
- Non-Game
- Sandbox game
- Text-based game (Needs citing, but it looks a lot better now, well done SharkD)
- Traditional game
- Twitch game
[edit] Articles of questionable notability or unclear usage
- Massively multiplayer mobile game (This is probably covered elsewhere anyway, possible AFD candidate)
- Massively multiplayer online virtual sex game (They're out there, but does this need a separate article?)
- Online skill-based game (Does this belong anywhere near here or grouped with gambling somewhere?)
- Otome game (Contributors with knowledge of these games need to sort out these genres, impenetrable)
- Side-scrolling video game (Mechanic of video games rather than a genre classification).
- Tactical wargame (Runs counter to turn based tactics, needs editing.)
- Top-down shooter (A perspective. Though it will often be used, it doesn't replace the other genres)
[edit] Deletions and merges
- Block kuzushi BOLDly merged into Breakout clones by SharkD during its AFD.
- Evolution computer game Randomran took it to AFD and it got caned.
- First-person adventure merged and redirected to Graphical adventure games.
- Picture maze genre classification removed by Randomran.
- Point-and-click game renamed to Point-and-click adventure game, currently a merge candidate with Graphical adventure games.
- Political game PRODded, redirected to Government simulation game.
- Software toy redirected to Non game.
- Tactical realism has been merged to Tactical shooter
[edit] Items for discussion / to-do list
Hey. I've been busy lately, but wanted to keep the ball rolling... or, at least keep a few notes here for future discussions/work.
- We definitely need that video game types article, with research. This is a high priority.
- There's enough games to justify a distinct sports management game article. Beyond just the Sports_game#Management section. (There's already a category: Category:Sports management video games)
- We need a casino video game article, for the numerous games that just imitate a real life casino. I've seen at least a couple dozen.
- I don't think the "traditional game" article can be supported by research, at least not the way it's been described. "Traditional" might not be the right word, although the concept is there. There's lots of video game adaptations of board games, card games, pinball games, trivia games, even computer mahjong... Maybe we need a "video game adaptation" article. Or some other rename.
- The Life simulation game article needs some serious help, along with some solid research. This should become a strong root for the pet-raising simulation article as well as a social simulation game split away from social simulations in general. Also, we may need to get into distinguishing the pet-raising simulation article from the digital pet article. Food for thought -- there's some limited research out there to justify the creation of a career simulation or job simulation article, as a subgenre.
- The space simulator versus space flight simulator articles have been long suggested as merger candidates... but the space simulator article includes information about simulations of solar systems and stuff. I think we can separate these two articles -- one being more of a science thing, and the other being more for games. But this would need some discussion, as the articles are still kind of intertwined and messy.
- There may be enough hunting games to justify a hunting video game article. Not sure on this one, though.
- Is it enough to have a minigame article, or do we need to have an article that describes minigame compilations? Not just party games. There are lots of minigame compilations that are meant for single players (like on the Nintendo DS).
- Are dating sims an RPG? I've seen a dating sim or two described under this heading. It's worth researching.
- I know it was mentioned earlier... but would it make sense to combine research on management games with the current construction and management simulation games article?
- We may need to add a few new stubs, too (for management simulation games, life simulation games, casino games, hunting games, and so on...)
Just throwing all of those discussion points out there. It's a lot to go through, so we can just discuss a few points at a time. Hopefully we can make some progress when you find a moment. 65.95.142.28 (talk) 03:40, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
Good grief, can't believe you posted over two weeks ago :( I'm sorry. I'll sit down and have a proper look at your suggestions and the articles soon. Someoneanother 23:44, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
- Haha, it's okay. I know you're busy. Take each discussion point one at a time.
Also, maybe it's time to start thinking about assembling an official task force? This is a lot of work for just 2 or 3 people. If there can be a WP:video games task force for devil may cry, then there should DEFINITELY be a task force for video game genres. If the genre articles don't reflect reliable research, then readers are going to be misinformed, let alone editors. The whole video game super project will suffer. 64.231.194.68 (talk) 17:22, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
Right, got the article I've been working on through GA, so now to look at these.. to be honest the whole genre thing overwhelmed me and I had to abandon it. Not having access to any book sources, which is where the relevant details are mostly locked up, squashed the ambition. SharkD, Randomran and others such as yourself have been chipping away at them, in order to really get them nailed down we need the project as a whole to take an interest and make some decisions on layout and scope. I'll try to contribute to these now. Randomran suggested a task force on the WP:VG talk page, I'd suggest showing your support there and encouraging discussion. In response to your suggestions:
- The types/terminology list would be a good thing (with a separate navigation template), but it's one thing that would really benefit from discussion at WP:VG. We seem to have a category for terminology like exergaming, it would make a good partner.
- There's certainly enough information and sources for a sports management article, are you asking for it to be created now or should we leave it till sources are lined up? TBH I'm leaning well towards fixing up what we've got before adding more articles.
- Casino games.. is there enough information and history there to support an article? They've been around long enough, but they're in effect what we're calling 'traditional games' - real-world games of chance, fruit machines and card games simulated on computer. Would a section there not say all there is to say on the subject?
- 'Traditional game' might not be the right term, perhaps another can be found.
- If life simulation is in trouble then perhaps we could look at that one as something to be working on? I would like to have just one genre article to slowly work on rather than taking them all on at once *wince*.
- Space simulators need sorting out (there's two separate items in there, the games set in space and programs which simulate space), but that sort of game isn't my forte and I'd rather leave it till I can look at it properly with an eye to splitting/merging/renaming once and for all.
- Hunting games, aren't the majority of these FPS games? Perhaps a sub-section there?
- Minigames article - which specific games do you mean by the single-player DS games? By definition a minigame is just a short game within a game - all the games focused on minigames I can think of are basically party games, even if it's possible for a single player to play alone. If that's not the case with particular games, perhaps they fit into other genres like action.
- Dating sims - these japanese genres aren't well covered in english sources (unless I've missed something), my only inclination with them is to leave them to someone who has knowledge and sources of them.
- Management - I can't remember the discussions about these, will have to look up.
- New stubs - if you have sources to prevent them being deleted, I'll make any you wish, just ask.
I've got one book, Guinness World Records Gamers Edition 2008, which covers the origins of several genres briefly, as well as another couple of books on the way. Now that I've got some materials it should be possible to actually do some work. I'll add life sims to my things to do and see what's what. Thanks for your patience.
