1966 8 local groups, 1967 20, 1969 90, 1973 150. 1972, approx 10 000 members. Older generation, pacifists, anti-nuclear mov founded SVK, from Clarté Working Group to support FNL. Groups emerged in Uppsala, Lund, Linköping, Örebro and Göteborg, all cities with universities. DFFG was able to mobilize 1000s of youths to demonstrations, bulletine sales, leaflets, stencils, fund collections, etc.. KFML influencial in DFFG. Twice split, rebels in 1968 and liq in 1970.[1]

Soc Dems set up SKfV to compete over students.[2]

First anti-war rallies held in mid-1965. In April 1966, DFFG formed. KFML leading role. Highly visible during Vietnam war.[3]


Initially the relation between DFFG and labour movement was marked by suspicion. gradually this decreased, as the labour movement adopted the slogans of dffg, and dffg moderated its discourse. dffg became dominant in the swedish debate on the vietnam war. The first fnl group formed in opposition to the old peace movement. in 1965 sharp conflict between 'usa out of vietnam', 'support fnl' and peace movement's 'peace in vietnam'. The pacifist line didn't differentiate between agreesor and victim, supported johnson's demand on the vietnamese in negotations. Rolf Bucht int sec until 1968, later joined SKfV. In 1975 DFFG became Vietnam and Laos League. Vietnam-Cambodia war split and dissolve the movement. Disbanded May 14, 1969, split in three factions, pro-Vietnam, pro-China and third position opposing bith vietnamese invasion in cambodia and chinese attack on vietnam.[4]

In February 1964 the Stockholm branch of Clarté started a study circle on the topic 'USA in the world of today'. Bo Gustafsson was the main speaker. Participants included Sköld Peter Matthis, Åsa Hallström and Gunnar Bylin. On May Day 1966, a group of activists left the main demonstration to burn the US flag outside of the US embassy. In the debate on foreign affairs in the parliament, both Prime Minister Olof Palme and Foreign Minister Torsten Nilsson referred to the DFFG activists as 'rascals'. Gradually DFFG stepped up its discourse against Soviet social-imperialism. In 1974 Sara Lidman publicly attacked DFFG for its anti-Soviet policies. The 1975 DFFG congress, held after the Vietnamese victory, removed the slogan 'Fight US imperialism', based on the argument that both US and Soviet imperialism need to be opposed. 1977 changed name to Vietnam & Laosförbundet för vänskap och solidaritet. Jan Myrdal had major political influence in DFFG.[7]

In February 1965 clarteists began holding protests outside the US embassy, but these protests went largely unnoticed. August 1965 SVK formed, after that first FNL group. In August 1966 DFFG first congress. Sköld Petter Matthis chair. In 1970 Ulf Mårtensson new chair.[8]

1972 DFFG published a 28-page english document, Documents of the United NLF-groups in Sweden.[9]

In 1973, 2.7 million Swedes signs petition calling for a stop of US bombings. All parliamentary parties supported the petition.[11]

June 1964, Matthis arrested and sentenced for disturbing public order and for 'having made his body heavy' during the arrest. Matthis appeal in a civil court, a case which he lost, pay 19 000 krona, collected by the movement. May Day 1972, 50 000 people, Stockholm, joint manifestation of SAP, VPK, DFFG. 1975 became friendship org for Vietnam and Laos. 1967 nationwide org, DFFG. [12]

World Peace Council conference in Stockholm April 24-April 25, the Clarté South Asia group met with Vietnamese delegates secretly (the Vietnamese delegates had been given visas on the condition that they would not conduct any other activity than participating in the conference). 1965 Söderhamn group. In Linköping the Spanish Civil War veteran started activities. In Linköping the group was prohibited by police to conduct fundraising, but fundraising was conducted in other towns in Östergötland. National conference DFFG august 1966, 12 local groups. No unity on political platform. The stockholm group most radical. Vietnambullentinen a motor in the movement. Many times study circles were formed, which developed into FNL-groups. In smaller towns the groups became dominated by youth in their early teens.[13]
