"Something I Learned Today" is a song by the Alternative rock/Punk rock band Hüsker Dü. It is the opening song on their landmark 1984 double album, Zen Arcade.
[edit] Meaning and style
The song was written by guitarist Bob Mould and is simply about growing up and not trusting many people. This fast-paced song, with simple verse and chord progressions, is considered to be one of their most well-known songs. It begins with a simple drum beat, then an undulating bass rhythm, and then it finally kicks into the verse riff. Mould and Hart harmonize vocally in the chorus.
[edit] Trivia
- According to Zen Arcade's liner notes, "Something I Learned Today" and "Newest Industry" were the album's only songs that were not recorded in one take.
- The song was later covered by Swedish Death Metal band Entombed, and released on their cover album Sons of Satan Praise the Lord.
- "Something I Learned Today: An International Tribute to Zen Arcade"[1] was compiled in 2004 for Zen Arcade's 20th anniversary by fans of Hüsker Dü and members of a long-running listserv for fans of the band Sugar.
