With Marshall and Lily's wedding reception in full swing, Ted and Robin begin discussing a big announcement, and when Barney hears that they have a big announcement, he becomes very interested. Ted and Robin try to get him to go away, even by playing "Have You Met Barney?," but Barney still wants to know what it is and why they haven't revealed it. Ted and Robin say that they haven't revealed it because of the wedding, and hadn't planned to until after the wedding. However, their story, which took place about 2-3 weeks before the wedding, begins at the restaurant where Ted and Robin had their first date in the pilot episode.

While at this restaurant, Ted and Robin receive two glasses of champagne, yet they didn't order any. To make things even more strange, Robin discovers an engagement ring at the bottom of the glass, and begins to think that Ted is proposing to her. At this point, Barney is scared that they are getting married, but Ted and Robin then reveal that they were given the champagne by mistake, and another guy claims the ring as his, and then proposes to his girlfriend, who accepts. (Josh Radnor, in his TV Guide blog, reveals that the proposal between the two extras playing the couple was real [1]; the girlfriend's acceptance had to be dubbed in post-production due to her being overcome in emotion at being asked.) Robin is relieved, as she didn't feel ready for marriage.

Things then become more interesting when the owner of the shop comes out and realizes that Ted is the man who stole his blue French horn. Ted and Robin try to leave, but fail in their attempt to run away. As such, Ted must return the blue French horn in order to get his credit card and driver's license back. They go to Robin's apartment, and Robin discusses that she doesn't want to settle down, and that she has always wanted to travel the world, going to places such as Argentina. Interestingly, Ted also expresses this desire, saying that he wished he had studied abroad for a year while at college and claiming that even Argentina needs architects, and since he just finished a big project at work, he feels that now is as good a time as ever to travel the world. Again, Barney is disgusted by this idea, not on the terms of their relationship, but mostly because he would be lonely in New York, and that Argentina is not exactly a stable country.

Ted and Robin then discuss the issue of kids. Robin at first doesn't like the idea, but Ted tells her that they could raise their kids on the road, and let their kids share the experiences of traveling around the world. Although Robin still doesn't want to have kids, she tells Ted that "if I were to have anyone's kids, I'd have yours." They initially decide to hold off, but then decide to take the risk. At this point, Barney is absolutely scared, seeing Marshall and Lily getting married and Ted and Robin raising kids. Furthermore, while Ted is drinking at the reception, Robin has a bottle of water instead and also catches the bouquet, leading Barney to believe that the rumors are true.

However, right as Marshall and Lily leave on the honeymoon, Ted and Robin then reveal that after they had sex that night, they realized that their relationship wasn't exactly heading in a direction either of them wanted to follow. Thus, after nearly a year of being together in a relationship, Ted and Robin broke up. This further stuns Barney, who wondered why he hadn't heard. Through a flashback to the episode Showdown, they explain that they decided to hold off announcing their breakup because of how stressed Lily was over the wedding. As Robin is asked by a little boy for a dance at the wedding reception, Barney tells Ted that even though he had always publicly stated that Ted and Robin weren't meant to be together, he thought that they were a good couple. Ted agrees, but says that they weren't headed the same direction. Ted then gets a drink from the bar and a cigar from Barney, and tells Barney that he's going to need a wingman again, at which point Barney is excited. Ted reveals that they both got what they wanted and Robin went on to travel the world, living in many foreign countries. As such, Robin is no longer considered by Ted to be "The One."

Meanwhile, Marshall and Lily cannot get anything to eat at their own wedding reception. Food is always taken right out from under them, relatives come and talk with them, and other things happen, causing them not to get anything to eat. Lily also becomes drunk, and misses in her attempt to feed Marshall some cake. When they finally get to the limo, which is driven by Ranjit, Marshall asks to stop at a fast-food restaurant so that they can get something to eat. At the restaurant, Marshall begins to fully realize that Lily is his wife, and his realization makes him happy. The season ends with Ted accepting Barney as his wingman, and Barney declaring the summer is going to be "Legen— wait for it...."

Ted and Robin use the "Have you met..." line to distract Barney, making Lily the only main character on whom the "Have you met..." line has not been used.
Ted and Robin broke up on their one year anniversary, proving Barney's Freeway theory (mentioned in "First Time in New York") wrong.
Ted and Barney are both wearing the same suit and tie at the wedding.

Like the previous episode, the title of this episode refers to the old saying about good luck tokens for brides: "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue." Something Blue also refers to the blue French horn that is a symbol of Ted and Robin's relationship, as well as to the state of mind.
Something Blue was the name of an episode of another Alyson Hannigan show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Taxi driver turned limo driver Ranjit acts as driver for the third time in the series. He previously made cameo appearances in Pilot and The Limo. He additionally made an appearance in the 3rd season episode Ten Sessions to help with Ted's 2 minute date with Stella.
