Canada is home to a modest to considerable number of Somalis, depending on both province and city. Somalis tend to be concentrated in the southern part of the province of Ontario, especially the Ottawa and Toronto areas. The Albertan cities of Calgary and Edmonton have also seen a significant increase in their respective Somali communities over the past five years.
In the early 1990's, Canada saw an increase in the total number of Somali immigrants entering the country, many of whom came from the United States as transit to claim refugee status in Canada.
According to the Canadian Census, the Somali population in Canada increased by 613% between the years 1991 and 1996.
