Solotvyno

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Solotvyno (Romanian "Slatina", Ukrainian Солотвино) is a village in the Tiachivskyi Raion in the Zakarpattia Oblast of Ukraine, located close to the border with Romania, on the right bank of the Tisa River (across from the Romanian city of Sighet).

It is also known as Rusyn: Solotvino, Hungarian: Aknaszlatina and Czech: Slatinské Doly. The village's name comes from the nearby salt mine.

It was a new village, first mentioned ca. 1360 (the old one was burned down by the Tatars in 1241); 9,700 inhabitants and 2,200 households. Most of the population is romanian.

A new border crossing was opened by the presidents of Romania and Ukraine on 15th January 2007. But this border crossing did not last much and was closed shortly after by the Romanian authorities. Many people from the both sides of border were left to make another 150 km around to get from one side of the Tisa river to another. [1]
