Solomon's Temple, Buxton
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Solomon's Temple, also known as Grinlow Tower, is a Victorian Folly close to the spa town of Buxton in the Derbyshire Peak District.[1]
It is said to have been built by Solomon Mycock in the 1890s,[2] paid for by public subscription to provide work for the locally unemployed with assistance of the seventh Duke of Devonshire.[3]
This is a twenty foot high, two-storey tower, sitting on top of a ridge at a height of 440 metres (1440 feet) above sea level built on top of a bronze age barrow.[2] From the open top of the tower there are good views down over the town, and also over the surrounding countryside and parts of the Peak District.
The tower which appears to have no obvious link with a temple was restored in 1998 again fittingly by public subscription.[3]
