"Solitaire" is a popular song written by Neil Sedaka and Phil Cody. It tells of a man losing touch with, and thus losing, his sweetheart. Alone, he's "playing solitaire".

Solitaire has been recorded by Sedaka, The Carpenters (a #17 hit in 1975, it topped the Easy Listening survey), Andy Williams (a #4 hit in the United Kingdom in 1973), Jann Arden, Sheryl Crow, Clay Aiken, and Sissel, among others.

[edit] The Carpenters' version

The Carpenters' version was released in 1975 on the Horizon album. The original version does not have the guitar lead in between Karen singing:

A heart that cared, that went unshared,
until it died within his silence.

and:

And Solitaire's the only game in town,
and every road that takes him down.

However, the single version (which can be found on the CD, Gold: 35th Anniversary Edition) has a guitar line between the verse and chorus.
